Types of Weight Loss Surgery - Procedure, Benefits & Risk

The Different Types of Bariatric Surgery:

There are main four types of weight loss surgeries commonly used to treat obesity. Gastric Banding, Sleeve Gastrectomy, Biliary Pancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch and Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass are the four major types of bariatric procedures. Most weight loss surgeries today are performed using minimally invasive techniques known as laparoscopic surgery.

 

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding Surgery Procedure:

In laparoscopic gastric band the surgeon places a adjustable band around the upper part of stomach to create a small pouch to limit the food. The adjustable band limits the amount of food you intake by making you feel full after eating small amounts of food. The surgery have no pain involve as it is performed using tiny camera which had placed inside patient belly. Such kind of surgery is called laparoscopic surgery.

Benefits:
- Requires a shorter hospital stay, usually lesser than 24 hours after surgery.
- Lowest risk for vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
- The surgery does not involve any cutting or stapling inside belly.

Risk:
- Common side effect of gastric banding is vomiting after eating too much too quickly.
- Scarring inside your belly, which could lead to a blockage in your bowel.
- Injury to your stomach, intestines, or other organs during surgery.
 

 

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery Procedure:

A sleeve gastrectomy surgery is a first step in a series of weight loss surgeries. For some people, it's the only surgery they need. In the operation, the surgeon removes about 75% of the stomach. What remains of the stomach is a narrow tube or sleeve, which connects to the intestines.
Benefits:
- Restricts the amount of food the stomach can hold.
- Shorter hospital stay, faster recovery.
- Better quality of life.

Risk:
- Typical risks include infection, leaking of the sleeve, and blood clots.

Bilio pancreatic diversion Procedure: 

Biliopancreatic diversion with a duodenal switch (BPD/DS), also called the “duodenal switch” is a surgical weight loss procedure utilizing both restrictive and malabsorptive methods to achieve long term weight loss. Doctors may recommend Bilio pancreatic diversion surgery with duodenal switch to people who are severely obese, usually with a body mass index equal of greater than 50 or a BMI of 40+ with serious type 2 diabetes.

Benefits:
- BPD/DS can result in substantial weight loss in a short period of time.
- Reduced chance of developing an ulcer.
- Is the most effective against diabetes compared to RYGB, LSG, and AGB

Risk:
- Damage to the adjacent organs such as the spleen, pancreas, and bile duct
- Higher chance of chronic diarrhea and foul smelling flatulence.
- Bleeding & Infection.

Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery Procedure:

Benefits:
- Average of 77% of excess body weight loss one year after surgery.
- Gastric bypass tends to have the strongest effect on high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and other obesity related health issues.
- It is effective for those people who tend towards high sugar or high fat foods.

Risk with Gastric Bypass Surgery:
Respiratory problems
- Leakage of the connection between the pouch and the intestine. This is very rare, but potentially dangerous.
- Poor views of internal organs.
